Extra Time Goal Sends the USWNT to the Semi Finals
U.S. Women’s National Team – Quarterfinals– Game Recap
The United States Women's National Team played Japan on Saturday, August 3rd in Paris, France for their Quarterfinal match.
Japan proved to be the toughest opponent yet for the United States as they entered halftime tied at 0-0. Japan had a good look in the 35th minute with Tanaka attempting a shot at goal. However, American goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was able to pick it off to keep the score tied at 0. Smith, Horan, and Lavelle also had looks at goal during the first half but were saved by the Japanese goalkeeper. The U.S. Women had 4 shots at goal with 78% ball possession versus Japan’s 2 shots at goal with 22% possession.
Japan made one substitution at half time with Hamano replacing Seike. The United States defender Emily Sonnett received a yellow card in the 57th minute after fouling Japanese midfielder Fujino. Rose Lavelle attempted a shot at goal in the 78th minute but sailed over the crossbar. Both teams battled it out in the second half looking for the opening goal but were unsuccessful. The United States and Japan headed into half an hour of extra time.
Before extra time began, the United States made a substitution with Lynn Williams entering the match for Mallory Swanson. Goalkeeper Naeher made a decisive save in the 101st minute to keep Japan off the scoresheet. Trinity Rodman got the United States on the scoreboard first in the 105’ +2 minute of the match to give the U.S. the 1-0 lead just before half time of extra time. Japan continued to press forward but were unable to find an equalizer.
With a win over Japan, the USWNT are headed to the semifinals and will play Germany on Tuesday, August 6th in Lyon, France.
